Lewis Carroll 1832-1898

Life: Lewis Carroll, also known as Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was born on January 27, 1832 in Cheshire. He was the oldest boy in and the third child in a four-and-a-half year old marriage. Eight more brothers and sisters were still to come at that time. In his early years, he was educated at home. He was always very smart all throughout school. At the age of seven he was reading The Pilgrim's Progress. When he was twelve, he was sent to a private school at nearby Richmond. In 1846 he moved on to Rugby School. He left Rugby in 1849 and went on to the college his father attended in Oxford, Christ College. Two days after he moved to Oxford, he was called back home because his mother had died due to a stroke when she was forty-seven.



Time Period: The Victorian Age. The values to the Victorian Age were very important to the people of that time period. The husband was the authority of the household. The "Victorian Compromise" was another name for the code of values. The code of values set is basis on religious and philosophical ways. The Victorian Age was characterized by stability and progress. Their values were based on duty and hard work, good manners, and regular attendance at church. Culture was another thing the Victorian Age mostly favored. In 1851, the Great Exhibition and the World's First Fair occurred. In the center of the century was the Crystal Palace, which was a huge, glass and iron structure. The Great Exhibition was a major part of the outbreak of photography. It resulted in drastic changes in Victorian art.

When Alice's sister is reading to her at the beginning of the story, she is getting very bored. She then sees a White Rabbit walking and looking at his watch while talking to hisself. She follows him down his rabbit hole and finds herself in the Wonderland. While in the Wonderland, she meets a caterpillar smoking a hookah. She also meet Cheshire Cat, a Hare, a Queen, a Duchess, and a Gryphon. All of the creatures she meets are all very different to her. Later on in the story, Alice ends up waking up only to find that everything that just happened was a dream.
